Checking the transmission oil, the dipstick turned but wouldn't unscrew. The cap was broken at the o-ring leaving the threaded part inside the tranny. It was never over tightened. A quick check on the web for a replacement showed this is a COMMON YANM...

Yes sir, mine as well. Cheap plastic for the application! Do you recall the part number? Tom Vail Hull 823

Captn Rick, I had same problem. I used a small screw driver inserted into the hole in threaded portion to undo and extract the threaded section and dip stick. Cleaned up the two plastic parts and used a high grade crazy type glue to re attach, so far ok....

Ron, while my Yanmar has generally been bullet-proof, I think this is pretty shoddy, especially when the replacement is so expensive. I think you're pretty courageous trying a repair. I opted to pay the ransom. Tom, there are so many different sticks ...

The transmission dipstick on our boat broke in the same manner about a year ago. The plastic at the break definitely seemed defective. It was soft and rubbery rather than hard like the outside. I thought about trying to glue the pieces together, but the c...

My threads stayed in the transi today. Tried my normal unscrewing, turned too easily.I'm thinking of using an "easyout" to remove the threaded portion. I expect this would work, but am concerned of a few small pieces of plastic falling into the transi.Que...

Norm, I do not think a couple of small pieces of plastic would do any harm. They are clearly quite soft while the gears are hardened steel. If you lose the entire plastic plug that would be another story. I would change the oil fairly soon in any case. I ...

I have replaced a broken transmission dipstick 3times on my 1989 yanmar. They cost $27 each in Annapolis. I would like to replace the dipstick with a brass or nylon plug and just save the dipstick for checking the level when desired. I presume that it ...

The thread used on the KM35A transmission is 18 mm x 1.5 mm pitch. Probably the same as the KW4A, but I have no way to check. This is a standard, if somewhat secondary, fine thread. Probably cannot be found at the local hardware store or big box store, bu...

Gene,Thanks for the specs for the dipstick threads.  It was easy to find a plug that fits.  Turns out that M18 1.5 is the size of the oil drain plug on some foreign cars. They cost only $3 and are stocked by many auto parts stores.  The had them in the...

If you are interested in the dipstick plug, Autozone has them in iron, NAPA has them in aluminum.GerryC42 108

My local dealer says Yanmar 177074-02450 is what I need, for $30. Picked it up, exactly same as broken dipstick. Pretty weird, o-ring not included, so used the one from the broken dipstick. An easyout took the threaded plastic out very easily. Don't think...

If anyone is planning to use the automobile drain plug as a replacement, make sure to add a vent hole. Without a vent the heat-generated internal pressure could force oil out of the shaft seals. This could lead to a much more expensive issue than simply r...

I was aware of the need for the vent hole in the plug.  Here is the note from the KM4A Service manual.  There is a small clearance between the dipstick and the inside of the dipstick tube. A small hole in the dipstick works as a breather. I used an alum...

I've scoured the internet (and the NAPA, Rielly, AutoParts, and other sites), and had a counter man at the local NAPA store dig into his books,  looking for the aluminum version of the drain plug. Do you have a part number for this?

So I got tired of replacing the plastic dip stick cap/tube assembly every 2-3 years. Seems no matter how careful I was, the plastic cap/threaded portion eventually shears off. I suspect that the plastic is slowly degreaded by contact with the transmission...
